A loop is a turn on one leg. It is performed when a figure skater slides along the arc and does a quick turn on his axis then goes at the same direction. There is left a track in the form of a loop. That is why it is called that. The loop is a hard turn. A good coordination is required. Loops are performed with any edges, but the element is done with the only entering edge.
